Fire Leaves Disabled Marine
Veteran and Family
Homeless
NEW CASTLE, De. - July 12, 2011 (WPVI)
-- A rental property in New Castle, Delaware was damaged
beyond habitation last week when fire erupted on the upstairs
floor.
In their attempts
to battle the blaze, firefighters were hampered time and time
again by a swarm of bees nesting nearby.
That same fire
has left a family of six homeless.
"I didn't lose
everything. I still have my wife and my kids. Getting everyone
out was most important," said Dallas Bolen, an ex-marine.
Bolen, his wife
and four children have lost virtually everything they own in the
blaze
Bolen is a
disabled marine sergeant, who was discharged in 2006 after two
tours of combat duty in Iraq.
He suffers from
post traumatic stress disorder, which finally cost him his job
in 2008.
Bolen and his
family were living in the small house owned by his uncle, that
had no renter's insurance.
The Bolens are
facing tough times once again.
The Red Cross and
a veteran's group gave the family shelter for a few days but now
the donated time is up and they are completely on their own.
In the time
being, Dallas Bolen is searching for a rental house that he can
afford out of his disability check.
He hopes to one
day be totally back on his feet.
"That's actually
the goal, to be able to go back to work, but it takes a while to
get the medication right, the counseling and the therapy.
There's a lot to it" said Bolen.
Bolen says he
will not let this latest setback get him down.
He tells Action
News that over the last decade his family has traveled too far
over troubled terrain to surrender to tough times now.
